Press relations as a PR practice – a diversity trap for practitioners – David Phillips
Phillips provides a depressing overview of the PR industry, and criticises it for being too reliant on media relations at a time when the print industry is sliding away, apparently depressing incomes and opportunities as a result. I agree with much of its main premise; there are too many chasing an ever-decreasing number of newsprint opportunities at a time when many meaningful conversations are happening elsewhere. Ultimately, we must adapt to this reality or die. But is it a surprise that so many of us (more than 80% of respondents to one survey) say media relations is part of our role (on top of everything else)? We are PR people, after all. I was depressed by what Phillips has to say about incomes though.
